Roti Prata at Restoran Nasi Kandar Hassaniah, Bandar Mahkota Cheras

There are good things to celebrate about, and there are the not-so-good. On the 1st of August I officially became 'unemployed.' As in, salary = zilch. Therefore, needing to be a bit frugal I've switched my eating habits (and by extension, blogging habits) to the cheap and frugal. After all, we Malaysians know that great food doesn't need to be expensive.

But why go where everyone else has gone, right? So, without any reference to google, here's (probably) the first food blog review of Restoran Nasi Kandar Hassaniah in Bandar Mahkota Cheras!

I'm guessing by the name of the shop that they specialize in their Nasi Kandar, but based on the strength of my wallet, I go for Roti Canai/Prata instead. But first, to start off, the obligatory Teh Tarik. It's decent, and not overly sweet like the way many other mamak's prepare it.

The 'gravy' of choice is dhall, which is a sort of 'assorted bean paste.' Taste is bland, and very, very watery - a bad omen for the food to come?

Plain Roti Canai/Roti Prata. It's called Canai in Malaysia but every other country I've been to it's called Prata.

And Roti Telur which is a canai/prata with egg.

Both Roti's turn out to be quite poor. The outer layer isn't crispy, and the inner layer is rather chewy and has an excessive 'dough'-ey taste. Would not come back again.

So ~ there's plenty of great Malaysian food at bargain prices, but this shop isn't one of them. Not going to bother with a map - but if you're ever in Bandar Mahkota Cheras, avoid this place like the plague!

Spaghetti Farm at Mid Valley Megamall

In a break from all my previous posts, here's a review of an eating place ... that sucks - The Spaghetti Farm which has opened somewhat recently in Mid Valley Megamall.

They seem to market themselves as a healthy italian food shop but ... in reality it's nothing more than just fast food-style spaghetti. They've got a simple menu of spaghetti with something like eight different sauces. It's MYR12.00 for a set meal of spaghetti, soup and a drink.

We try two different soups - Mushroom and Chicken, which turn out to be tasteless and starchy, almost as if the soup was watered down and starched up to save money. Even Pizza Hut's soup tastes better.

We try Beef and Cheese, and Beef Bolognese. Despite being very hungry I couldn't finish my bowl, and the darling didn't even get halfway through hers.

And there you have it. MYR12.00 isn't even good value, considering you could get a way better pasta for a couple of dollars more in Prego (after 50% SP discount of course ^_^). Don't ever come here to eat.
