J Tean Kitchen - BKT and other Porcine delights at SSTwo Mall

Offtopic: We are now on Twitter, so Follow Us on Twitter to get first-hand updates whenever we ... update!

New malls can sort of be like a chicken-and-egg thing - if there are no shops, nobody comes, and if nobody comes, then shops don't open. And for now, it seems that SSTwo Mall (in ... dun dun dun ... SS2!) is in danger of falling into that catch-22 as it's got barely a third of its' shoplots occupied.

Which is a shame, though, because there are some pretty good new makan places - J Tean Kitchen opened its' doors a month ago and are currently running a 20% discount off everything until the end of May.

No idea where the name comes from, but anyways J Tean is basically a pork lovers paradise, with dishes like ribs, pork pies, bak kut teh and dongpo pork. Deco is nice and airy, although indoors is a bit noisy due to the nearby gymnasium blasting techno music.

Drinks - Rose Flower Tea (MYR4.50) and Jasmine Green Tea with Honey Longan ($2.80).

We try the J Porky Pie (MYR19.90), a fusion dish combining braised chili pork with black sauce, in a pie crust (quite similar to a crossaint-type pastry). We liked this dish quite a bit - it was like a more moist "dry Bak Kut Teh" with a nice chili aftertaste.

Combo 1 Bak Kut Teh (MYR20.90) has pork belly, ribs and stomach in a herby Bak Kut Teh soup. We felt that for KL standards the BKT was above average, however there was a distinct lack of pork flavor in the gravy - understandable since J Tean is not a 'dedicated' BKT restaurant (hence they wouldn't have boiled enough piggy parts to get a really strong taste).

Total bill after 20% discount came up to MYR42.90 for two, which is pretty cheap! If you're in the area, do head down to SSTwo Mall to give J Tean a try - go fast though, the discount is only running til the end of the month.

Ah Khai Char Siew Chicken Rice in Simon Delights is a fake!

Just a very quick and easy Sunday Afternoon update. Ah Khai Famous Char Siew Chicken Rice has moved earlier this month from Simon Delights restaurant, to Restoran Mei Yen which is just a few blocks down the street. Here's Ah Khai himself standing at his new stall at the new place.

The Char Siew is as good as before, and it's also as fatty as before - don't order the 'pun fei sou' if you don't have a high tolerance for fats, because it's *very* fat. Price also seems to have risen a bit - it's rm7 per portion now. Still worth it!

Here's the thing though, the darling and I drove past his old stall at Restoran Simon's Delights, and his old stall is still there, with signboard and everything, just that it's being operated by different people now.

Quick summary then:
Ah Khai Famous Char Siew Chicken Rice in Restoran Mei Yen = Legit.
Ah Khai Famous Char Siew Chicken Rice in Restoran Simon's Delights = Fake!

Annie 1's Menglembu Wanton Mee @ Damansara Uptown, Petaling Jaya

Damansara Uptown has been pretty famous with nice food. Seeing a friend post on facebook picture of Menglembu Wanton Mee, it makes me crave for Wanton Mee. Never really went to Ipoh to try it out yet. Googled "Menglembu Wanton Mee" & found this place Annie 1 at Damansara Uptown, pretty near SS2 my house. Dropped by to satisfy my craving, and also kind of bully dear, by sending him a picture of it thru Whatapps, as he was still in Kenya back then.

This is the Annie 1's signboard, So look for a red signboard when you're around that area.

Annie 1

When me & my little bro arrived at about 1.45pm it was FULL HOUSE!!! Here is prove~
The whole Kopitiam is decorated simple and they have a 32" TV hanging near the counter showing Astro Food Channel...haha~

Annie 1

We started off with Five (5) pieces of fried dumpling (sui gao), MYR6.00. Similar to other fried dumplings, it was hot & crispy, but, they actually added slightly different ingredient that made taste a little like cornflakes. hehe! I know it's weird but me & my little bro tasted the same way~

Annie 1 - Fried Wan Tan

The attraction & signature is their Menglembu Wanton Mee, also since it was a hot day, so we ended up not trying the soup Wanton Mee. We both ordered their Dry Wanton Mee w Char Siew & Wanton. The Wanton Mee was firm and springy, the black sauce is flavored just nice with a little saltness + sweetness. Not forgetting their Char Siew is Half Fatty Half Lean Char Siew (半肥瘦) which is heavenly! Definitely one of the best Wanton Mee I have ever eaten. Not forgetting the Wantons given was meaty with similar filling as the fired dumplings too! As some Wantan Mee stalls serves stingy fillings in their wanton.
This is the normal serving MYR5.50

Annie 1 - Wan Tan Mee

My little bro was a hungry boy, so he went for add 1 whole noodle. So, this huge serving cost RM6.70.

Annie 1 - Wan Tan Mee

For drinks, we actually settle for their Fresh Orange Juice because it was catchy in the menu!!! 2 types?!?!?! What is the difference? Let's tell you about it...

Annie 1

Finding it extremely surprising I have not find any restaurants or coffee shop serving blended Orange Juice. Don't worried as the orange is finely blended so you won't taste any chucks that you need to chew on.

Annie 1 - Orange Juice

Fresh Orange Single, MYR2.60
Being single that means smaller!!! heehee~ on the right. Extreme orangey taste~ A little too much sugar.

Fresh Orange Double - (no ice & sugar added), MYR4.00
On the left side is the Double. Seriously no ice, no sugar, i believe only a small amount of water is added only. Just like the orange juice that i blend for myself at home from time to time. ^^
Not to worry, as it is served cold.

There are a lot of other dishes served there. Here are some pictures of their Menu!

Our bill can up to MYR24.80. For those Ipoh-ian, head down & tell me the verdict if I had tasted the real Menglembu Wanton Mee or I still need to go down to Ipoh to try the real one, which actually I hope I can go for a makan-makan day trip...

Sushi Tei Revisit @ Tropicana City Mall, Petaling Jaya

**Surprise** **Surprise**

Sushi Tei is now doing charity to assist the immediate relief efforts and support for the Japanese people...

Today 25 March 2011, yes special only this Friday... Half of their Total Sales from all their outlets will be donated!

What are you waiting for? I'll be updating in this same post below this email image sent by my dear from Kenya! Heading there for early brunch... Definitely will be eating Toro to make dear jealous as a while ago he was craving for it~!!

Doing this as I LOVE Sushi, & Happy that Sushi Tei is thoughtful enough as a Japanese Cuisine restaurant to help out the Japanese victims.

I'll be playing my part in helping them to pool more funds. How about you? ^_^

Back from lunch~~~~~~~

Today I believe they were expecting a HUGE crowd to come. Dozens of new waiter and waitress without experience and probably sushi chefs too. Had some simple problem situations:
(a) to order Dai Dai Roll
Me: "are the Mango sweet today?"
Waiter A: "er....... ah? sweet. yes. sweet." answer given after asking 3-4 times.

(b) before ordering Toro Sushi
Me: "is the Toro cut nice today?"
Waiter A: "yaya." (but with blur look) called another waitress.
Waitress B: "it's imported all Toro cut is all same."
Me: "oh really? coz i ate 3 times 1 time the cut is horrible."
Waitress B: "nono, Miss. It's all the same."

This makes me feel that the quality of the service has dropped way too much since the first time me & dear first visited Sushi Tei here.

As usual for a Japanese Cuisine it goes pretty well with Green Tea Hot and Cold are served. MYR 2.00

Dai Dai Roll. MYR 13.80
with the crab meat, sweet mango, Purple Lettuce rolled up in the middle of sushi rice, then covered with salmon sashimi, Along with the combination of 2 different dressings and Ebiko makes it a very refreshing feel.

Salmon Ikura Oyako Don
(L) Size MYR 19.80
(S) Size MYR 12.80
Tons of sushi rice with the bowl top cover with salmon and salmon roe. The served salmon given was like only 2mm-3mm thin! along with 1 or 2 teaspoons serving of Salmon Roe. Would really rather go for individual sushi instead of this. Comparing this to MYR 4.80 for 2 large generous slice of salmon (5mm-6mm thick) on top of the salmon sushi.

Chuka Iidako MYR 6.80
Baby Octopus seasoned with sesame. It was okay only. Ordered because my little bro is crazy about this.

Unagi Avocado Handroll MYR 6.80
A full piece of seaweed, with sushi rice, served with a little unagi sauce at a corner of with Eel with Avocado in the middle. It only comes with a 1cm wide slice of Unagi in it. Pretty unimpressive but, the avocado made it sweeter and blends in well.

Unagi Sushi. MYR 6.80
It's a generous Portion served today compare to my last few visit. Yummy!

Toro Sushi. MYR 18.80
This extremely satisfying melt in the mouth best slice of fish ever. Dear & my favorite however, it is pricey. How it should actually looks like that you can taste that feeling, it's in the left side, today with the in-experience staff & chef i got the right slice where it had not enough fat~!!! rating for it dropped by half...

The bill came up to MYR 79.40 which i believe, MYR 39.70 will be donated. :)

Feeling good in heart for doing a indirect charity and also full happy stomach of healthy meal.

Eat Seafood, Shop Seafood, at the same place - Nikudo Seafood, SS2.

Nikudo seafood! I kind of happened across this place by chance - on my way home from KL from Penang after CNY balik kampung, hunting SS2 for food. We were going to go to the SS2 medan selera, but then on noticing this "new" place, decided to give it a try! Strangely, I've got no recollection of what the previous shop was :)

Anyways Nikudo, despite having a rather Japanese sounding name, has nothing to do with the land of the rising sun. It's kind of a 'combo' shop - they also sell frozen seafood (one of the waitresses said from Sabah, among other places), things like 七星斑, scallops, fish, etc. No clue as to which is the 'main' business though.

Anyway skip the freezers, because we're here tonight for the food! The place is bright and cheery. It also kind of has a Japanese feel to the deco.

Cuisine is simple and unpretentious. They've generally got two 'branches' (for lack of a better word) on the menu. Firstly, the grill - there's stuff like grilled squid, prawns, fish, all things seafood. We only go for the otak otak. It tasted pretty good, no comparison to the Johor ones of course.

The second branch on the menu is basically assorted seafood noodles and porridge. I have the teochew-style seafood porridge with sweet potatoes. It comes with a few fishballs and pieces of soft sweet potato. I think the fishballs were pretty nice and fresh - they're not the 'springy' variety though, they're more of the 'meaty' type.

I don't exactly know what this is, ha ha :( ... I know it was some kind of noodle, probably seafood (or fish) noodles. The broth wasn't particularly special, although the fish and the fishballs were fresh.

Mum had the seafood tom yam. I found the prawn rather ... OK. It was decently fresh, but in a shop that also makes a business of selling seafood, shouldn't it be super ultra fresh? Tom yam was tasty and nice and sour, if a bit lacking in the "oooomph" and spiciness department.

Nikudo Seafood is opposite the entrance to the SS2 food court - it's the same row as KTZ, and that DVD shop that everyone goes to buy their 'evaluation' discs from. Prices range from rm10-rm20 per dish, so it's not cheap - but you do get your seafood direct from an importer/distributor so in theory it should be fresher than most other makan places.

ABC (Air Batu Campur) @ PJ SS2 Medan Selera

This is my very first post on food-blog post to introduce you guys to some places that i have actually went to since dear is at his work trip at Nairobi, Kenya. There are more to come soon from both of us so keep clicking, research here before you set your gathering with friends and check our reviews to have more confidence in where you're heading to. :)

In search for a different version of Air Batu Campur (ABC)?

It's time for you to actually head to SS2 Medan Selera Stall 28 and try this version! Amazingly, my whole family loves it and also my uncle & aunties will pop by frequently if we're in a mood for some after-dinner ABC. It's worth trying it as your dessert if you're there for your meals.

This amazing bowl of Air Batu Campur, without fail the consistency of ice and syrups is just right. It consists of a mountain of snow ice with coconut milk, evaporated milk, gula melaka, along with generous toppings of red bean, cendol, cincau, corn, jellies & peanuts. These treasures lying above the mountain
of snow ice blends pretty well together to quench your thirst & solve your semi-sweet tooth.

You're also able to get different fresh fruit juices and soya bean drink from this stall.

Each bowl cost MYR2.50

Lobster Lobster Lobsterman! Cheap Lobster restaurant in SS2

Here are three quick facts about Lobsters that I bet you didn't know:

1. Not all lobsters have claws.
There are two kinds of lobsters, and these are commonly referred to as "clawed" lobsters and "spiny" lobsters. Spiny lobsters do not have claws, but instead have long, strong antennae.

2. Lobsters can live a long time.
Lobsters are long-lived animals, and are thought to be capable of living over 100 years.

3. Lobsters can grow to over 3 feet.
The largest American lobster was caught off of Nova Scotia, and weighed 44 pounds, 6 ounces and was 3 feet, 6 inches long.

No, I didn't research that myself - I just copied it from this website :P. So this blog is also educational! Ha ha.

Back to the food, though - mum strongly hinted that she wanted lobster to celebrate her 55th birthday, so here we are in Lobsterman in SS2.

Caesar Salad for the whole family to share. Nothing much to say, I mean ... it's a salad ... and is eaten for health, rather than taste, purposes.

Anyway, we have a 'family set,' which feeds four - it comes with 4 soups of the day, and your choice of a dozen mussels or escargots, which are pictured below:

The family set comes with a sizeable mixed grill platter. The chicken chop and the vegetables are standard fare. The lamb shank and the steak, however, are absolutely delicious. Perhaps a tad bit on the salty side, but forgiveable considering that people come here for the lobster, not the meat :)

If you're a lobster virgin, fear not! As the restaurant provides a nice laminated card with 7-step instructions as to how to eat your lobster.

And finally the stars of the evening - this is the Lobster Thermidor. It's pretty good!

We also add on another lobster - this one is the Lobster Yee Mien. Probably can't tell from this picture, but there's a HUGE amount of noodles - way too much for us to finish. I find myself enjoying this dish more. Possibly because the head chef in Lobsterman is from Hong Kong.

Just as a side note, I very much like the way you order your lobster here in Lobsterman. At most other places, you choose your lobster and then get a heart attack when you get the bill after realizing it was much heavier than it looks. But in lobsterman, you specify what weight (and price) of lobster you want, and then they'll choose one and cook it. Thumbs-up.

Anyway, just to round up the night, the family set meal also comes with four small mixed fruits cups.

Overall we're extremely satisfied with the meal. Bill for the night came up to slightly over MYR450, which in my opinion is very very reasonable for a lobster dinner for a family of seven.

The Lobsterman is at no. 53, Jalan SS 2/30, 47300 PJ.

Dimsum Lunch at Tai Thong Imperial Garden, PJ

Just a side note that all the photos in this post were taken with our new iPhone 4. How's the quality of the 5-megapixel camera with LED flash? You decide!

Anyway our dimsum lunch destination is Imperial Garden in PJ, which is part of the Tai Thong group of restaurants. It's on the 7th floor of a building named Intan Square, next to the Armada Hotel. Decorations are 'ok' for a Chinese restaurant, but the layout is a bit odd - it's something like a 4 table by 15 table layout.

I can't remember which of you jokers told me that the siew yuk (Roast Pork Belly) here is the best in town, but it was nothing special. And at $25.00 for this portion, pretty expensive too. The skin was only just semi-crispy, and the meat was also on the chewy side (for siew yuk). Don't get me wrong, it's actually not bad, but nowhere near 'best in town.'

Nevertheless, on to the dimsum! The siew mai is nice and juicy - as it is only steamed upon ordering. The char siu pao was also pretty good. Bread was soft and fluffy, with generous meat stuffings. Taste-wise only above average, though.

Deep Fried Salad Prawn was also quite good, with some nice fresh and juicy prawns. Unfortunately the woo kok was a rather big miss - too much yam and too little fillings. Plus the overall taste was just a bit bland.

Overall, the dimsum was quite decent, but the pricing is a bit on the high side. Siew Yuk, Char Siu Pao, Siew Mai x2, Salad Prawn and Woo Kok isn't really quite enough for two, but even that already cost slightly above MYR70.00. Hard to recommend coming here for dimsum lunch when other places such as Jin Xuan are better, cheaper, and just 10 minutes drive away.

Imperial Garden PJ - Banquet Information

Congratulations to Mr Frankie Su whose beloved son Victor might be back in KL to do wedding luncheon/dinner! Anyways, was helping to check out the banquet information at Imperial Garden, Tai Thong, PJ (the one next to Armada Hotel).

The prices above are nett only if you have 30 tables or more. If you have less than 30 tables, need to add MYR30.00, and +15% (10% for service charge, 5% govt tax), i.e. set A instead of MYR638.00 nett, would be MYR802.70 nett. For that, you still get the following benefits except the 3 crossed-out items:

Here's a view of the big banquet hall. If the big hall is not booked, the restaurant will let you use it irrespective of number of tables; otherwise the smaller party will have to make do with the small hall.

Closer view of the VIP table and stage:

View of the "back" of the small hall:

View of the "front" of the small hall. Small hall only can seat 17 tables max.

Deposit is RM3000.00 (cash) and your booking will only be confirmed upon payment of this deposit. Number of tables must be confirmed 1 week before banquet date, and after that date, only allowed to add more tables (not allowed to subtract/reduce).

Other things ... uh ...
- Parking is MYR3.00 per car, at the basement of the building (Free 1 car for bride/groom).
- Small hall has sound system and projector but don't have karaoke.
- Haven't tried the dinner, but I had dimsum lunch and it was decent (full review to be posted later).
