Personalized Western & Asian Food at Temptations, Bdr Mahkota Cheras

Temptations Restaurant and Bar in Bandar Mahkota Cheras is one of the very few places I know where you can actually call up the Chef and ask him to customize / personalize a meal for you (and your family). If you've got an upcoming date and your partner loves ribs, call up, and the Chef will happily go look for a nice rack for the day. It makes the entire dining experience pretty personal, especially since the Chef will likely also come out of the kitchen and pay you a visit to ask how everything is.

For my birthday lunch with family, my mum called up and requested for a decent steak, so the Chef went out and bought some Angus Rib Eye, served on a bed of mashed potatoes and broccoli. While I thought that the meat was well seared and well rested, I would have preferred a more substantial (read: thicker) cut of meat.

The Crispy Salmon comes with the same mashed potatoes and broccoli, served with a squash puree. I also thought that the fish was pretty well cooked, with the skin giving a nice crisp.

Coming back to the personalization thing. Temptations is a Western restaurant, but because my dad isn't a big fan of Western cuisine, the Chef bought and cooked up a nice pot of Curry Fish Head with rice and pappadum. It's not the best curry in the world, but it's solid enough to hold its' own in a proper curry restaurant.

One small minus point is that the place isn't air-conditioned. While it was plenty cool enough to have a comfortable lunch in, the lack of any (tinted) glass means that it can get a bit glaring for guests facing outside.

Friendly service and personalized food cooked to your liking - what's not to love, right? Unfortunately Temptations is located in Bandar Mahkota Cheras, and it seems the local populace doesn't perhaps have much stomach for medium-range Western Food. Pity, then, because it really is a pretty nice place to have a casual meal. Non-halal.

Kim's Korean BBQ in Bandar Mahkota Cheras - Set Lunch

Just a really really short mini-post about Kim's Korean BBQ in Bandar Mahkota Cheras. I'm here not for the Korean BBQ, however, but for the very reasonable set lunch at $10.00.

It seems that it's a Korean thing to always have many many different side dishes to go with the mains. For the set lunch here at Kim's, there are 5 sides (which is a very low number for Korean restaurant standards). The kimchi was quite nice! I don't know why they insist on serving the sides in these mini dishes though. Must be a nightmare for Koreans when they're washing up after dinner - just imagine washing like 30 plates for a family of 5 ...

Anyway back to the topic: I have the Dae-ji Bul-go-gi (Spicy Marinated Pork). It's actually pretty good, and not too spicy - some Korean places can really go overboard in upping the chili level in their dishes.

The MYR10.00 for set lunch also comes with drinks, and if memory serves me right, a slice of fruit, which is a very reasonable price. Definitely worth to check it out if you're in the area and have a hungering for Korean food.

Roti Prata at Restoran Nasi Kandar Hassaniah, Bandar Mahkota Cheras

There are good things to celebrate about, and there are the not-so-good. On the 1st of August I officially became 'unemployed.' As in, salary = zilch. Therefore, needing to be a bit frugal I've switched my eating habits (and by extension, blogging habits) to the cheap and frugal. After all, we Malaysians know that great food doesn't need to be expensive.

But why go where everyone else has gone, right? So, without any reference to google, here's (probably) the first food blog review of Restoran Nasi Kandar Hassaniah in Bandar Mahkota Cheras!

I'm guessing by the name of the shop that they specialize in their Nasi Kandar, but based on the strength of my wallet, I go for Roti Canai/Prata instead. But first, to start off, the obligatory Teh Tarik. It's decent, and not overly sweet like the way many other mamak's prepare it.

The 'gravy' of choice is dhall, which is a sort of 'assorted bean paste.' Taste is bland, and very, very watery - a bad omen for the food to come?

Plain Roti Canai/Roti Prata. It's called Canai in Malaysia but every other country I've been to it's called Prata.

And Roti Telur which is a canai/prata with egg.

Both Roti's turn out to be quite poor. The outer layer isn't crispy, and the inner layer is rather chewy and has an excessive 'dough'-ey taste. Would not come back again.

So ~ there's plenty of great Malaysian food at bargain prices, but this shop isn't one of them. Not going to bother with a map - but if you're ever in Bandar Mahkota Cheras, avoid this place like the plague!
