Restoran Chiun Yi Roasted Meats - Kampung Baru Balakong

Sister is back for a one-week break from National Service! To celebrate, the entire family goes off to nearby Restoran Chiun Yi for some assorted roasted meats.

The shop also sells a small selection of yong tau foo. Focus is surely on the roast meats though.

Another view of the auntie and uncle busy chopping away.

What I like most about this place is that it's air conditioned! Most roast meats places are hot and noisy, but here we can relax in air conditioned comfort.

On to the food - we start off with some basic yong tau foo - Fried foo cuk (beancurd skin), brinjal, and tau foo pok (some sort of tofu). All stuffed with solid fish paste. Not too bad, but not spectacular either.

The focus of course, is on the meats. The siew yuk is nice and has a nice crispy skin. Char siew is of the sweet-glazed variety, and is also pretty good, although I would have prefered a more BBQ'ed/charred texture/taste on the skin. The Roasted Chicken was a tad bit too salty. No comments on the sausage because I didn't eat it.

Overall, the bill came up to MYR70 for 8-person portion of roast meat, 6 drinks and 6 pieces of yong tau foo, which is plenty cheap. To get here, take the SILK highway from Mines towards Kajang, and turn left when you see the Kampung Baru Balakong signboard.

Photo Spam: Villa Danieli at Sheraton Imperial, KL

Photo spam! Some photos of our second (and last) trip to Villa Danieli in Sheraton Imperial KL. Gave it a second chance, but still, food is expensive but yet mediocre, and service is poor. Pity, because the decoration and ambience make this one of the nicest restaurants we've been to in KL.

Blogpost for our previous visit: Villa Danieli - Fine Italian at Sheraton Imperial KL.

Carpaccio of Beef:

Carpaccio of Tuna (on bed of cold potatoes):

Fried Calamari:

Prawn Ravioli:

Beef Lasagna:

Seafood in Tangy Marinara sauce:

Beef Steak:

Apologies for, you know, not having the prices. Or the actual proper names of the dishes, kind of forgotten that Villa Danieli doesn't have their menus online :)

Overall, I'm quite disappointed in the quality of restaurants at the Sheraton Imperial - most definitely the worst among the three Starwood hotels (the other two being Westin and Le Meridien, which have awesome places to eat).

Restoran Jiann Chyi - cheap seafood in Sekinchan

"Sekinchan is a little town in the middle of the main rice-bowl area of Selangor, in the Sabak Bernam district." Having read lots of stories about how beautiful the place is, and how cheap the seafood is, the darling and I take a short roadtrip to see for ourselves.

Upon arrival, it's immediately evident that we've chosen the wrong time to visit. The padi fields have recently just been harvested, and the farmers are tilling the land in preparation for planting, so no photographs of luscious green fields, or close-ups of almost-ready-to-harvest padi stalks.

Still, there's no denying that there's a certain kampung (village) charm, and it's a great break from the hectic Kay-El lifestyle.

We also pay a visit to the Nine Emperor Gods Temple. You can actually climb up to the top of the two pagodas on the left and right, which gives an awesome view of all the surrounding padi fields.

Our main reason to come here is for the seafood though, and we settle for Restoran Jiann Chyi.

The waitress (or most likely the owner's daughter), recommends Black Shark. It's cooked in a sort of black bean sauce. The cooking style is nice, but the shark meat has a certain fishy aftertaste to it that perhaps is an acquired taste.

No complaints about the King Prawn though. The meat is springy and very fresh, and the cooking style - similar to a dry mabo style with dried chili - is nice.

We round off the meal with stir-fried sweet potato leaves. Not much to comment, it's a vege dish after all, ha ha.

Cost overall including 4 glasses of leong sui (herbal tea) came up to $40.60, which is pretty cheap! Without factoring in the cost of travel, of course. Sekinchan is a nice road trip place; Google shows that there are lots of other things to do such as eel and prawn fishing - and at about 1-1.5 hours drive, isn't that far away.

Roti Prata at Restoran Nasi Kandar Hassaniah, Bandar Mahkota Cheras

There are good things to celebrate about, and there are the not-so-good. On the 1st of August I officially became 'unemployed.' As in, salary = zilch. Therefore, needing to be a bit frugal I've switched my eating habits (and by extension, blogging habits) to the cheap and frugal. After all, we Malaysians know that great food doesn't need to be expensive.

But why go where everyone else has gone, right? So, without any reference to google, here's (probably) the first food blog review of Restoran Nasi Kandar Hassaniah in Bandar Mahkota Cheras!

I'm guessing by the name of the shop that they specialize in their Nasi Kandar, but based on the strength of my wallet, I go for Roti Canai/Prata instead. But first, to start off, the obligatory Teh Tarik. It's decent, and not overly sweet like the way many other mamak's prepare it.

The 'gravy' of choice is dhall, which is a sort of 'assorted bean paste.' Taste is bland, and very, very watery - a bad omen for the food to come?

Plain Roti Canai/Roti Prata. It's called Canai in Malaysia but every other country I've been to it's called Prata.

And Roti Telur which is a canai/prata with egg.

Both Roti's turn out to be quite poor. The outer layer isn't crispy, and the inner layer is rather chewy and has an excessive 'dough'-ey taste. Would not come back again.

So ~ there's plenty of great Malaysian food at bargain prices, but this shop isn't one of them. Not going to bother with a map - but if you're ever in Bandar Mahkota Cheras, avoid this place like the plague!
